Ara Institute of Canterbury is one of New Zealand's largest tertiary institutions , has five campuses throughout the Canterbury region (two in Christchurch and one each in Ashburton, Timaru and Oamaru), making it the largest tertiary institute in the South Island.

All Ara programmes - whether foundation, certificate, diploma, degree or graduate diploma - have a strong emphasis on work-integration and are structured on the requirements of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

Ara Institute of Canterbury is a progressive tertiary institute providing world-class, tertiary-level education throughout the Canterbury and Waitaki region. Ara was created in 2016 when education providers CPIT and Aoraki Polytechnic merged, bringing together two well-established organisations and over 200 years of collective experience and success .

The Ara experience is all about learning, respect, innovation, connection and success. Ara tutors have years of professional experience and extensive industry connections. Most programmes include work-integrated learning (up to 1400 hours for some qualifications) and its course completion rate is among the highest in New Zealand

Each year around over 19,000 students enrol at Ara campuses throughout the Canterbury and Waitaki region in order to excel in their chosen field or to qualify for further study either in New Zealand or in their home country. International students make up 12% of students at Ara and more than fifty different nationalities are represented.

One of the most important choices you need to make when coming to Ara is where to live. Options for you to consider include flatting, private board or homestay accommodation with a local family.

If you are an international student visiting New Zealand for the first time, you are strongly recommended to apply for homestay accommodation. Not only does a homestay provide a warm family environment with your own room and meals provided, it gives you the opportunity to assimilate into the New Zealand way of life by becoming part of a New Zealand family.

For further information about homestays in Christchurch or Timaru, please contact the New Zealand Education Advisor Services at Ara Institute of Canterbury.

You may choose to stay with your host family for the duration of your studies, move into a furnished hostel or set up an apartment with friends. www.ara.ac.nz/accommodation

Otautahi House is a modern apartment complex opposite the City campus. It has 36 apartments accommodating 192 Ara students. As a resident at Otautahi House you’ll enjoy the friendship of fellow residents from a range of backgrounds, places and programmes of study. You’ll share experiences together, like flatting for the first time and exploring a new city. You and your flatmates have the flexibility to organise your own shopping and cooking rosters. Some cleaning services are provided, and pastoral care from designated Ara staff is always available.
