Living costs depend on where and how you choose to live. Your costs will depend on factors like your course selection, personal circumstances and lifestyle. If you will be studying in New Zealand for more than one year, you‘ll need to prove that you have at least $15,000 to support yourself for the first year. If you’re studying for less than a year, you must have at least $1250 for each month of study to contribute to your living expenses.

Located in the Christchurch suburb of Ilam, the university is a ten minute drive away from the city centre and close to both mountains and the sea. Its campus houses a variety of facilities including libraries, laboratories and research centres to accommodate its 14,000 students. The main campus is set within 87 hectares of land and student accommodation is surrounded by playing fields and forests, as well as the renowned Ilam Gardens, famous for its flowers, trees and waterways.

UC offers 70 degree programmes across five colleges, including Arts, Business and Economics, Education, Engineering and Science, and a School of Law. It also boasts the most extensive network of field stations for research of any New Zealand university, with sites in Antarctica and Nigeria (as part of the Nigerian Montane Forest conservation project) and the country’s leading astronomical research facility at Mount John, Tekapo.

Undergraduate qualifications

If you want to study towards a Bachelor Degree (excluding teaching degrees), Certificate of Proficiency, Undergraduate Certificate or Diploma, or Graduate Certificate or Diploma you must have one of the following:

• IELTS Academic with an average score of 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 in reading, writing, listening and speaking

Postgraduate qualifications

If you want to study towards a postgraduate qualification, eg a Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, or PhD you must have one of the following:

• IELTS Academic with an average score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking

Academic entry requirements

If you are applying for admission to the University on the basis of an international (non-New Zealand) qualification, you must meet UC’s academic entry requirements . If you do not meet UC’s academic entry requirements you may be able to achieve these by successfully completing the UC International College Foundation Studies Certificate or one of the University Transfer Programmes available. Note that some programmes have additional entry requirements.

UNDERGRADUATE QUALIFICATIONS:

• An overall average of 75% with a minimum of 60% in English in the All-India Senior School Certificate or the India School Certificate (ISC);

• An overall average of 80% with a minimum of 65% in English from one of the following three Indian State Board year 12 qualifications: (i) Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary               Certificate (HSC), (ii) Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Higher (Secondary) School Certificate; (iii) Karnataka Pre-University Certificate;

• One year of successful study (B average / First Class / First Division) towards an undergraduate degree at a recognised university in India with a current NAAC accreditation of B or better;

• Completed a degree at a recognised university with a current NAAC accreditation of C or better.

POSTGRADUATE REQUIREMENTS:

Normally the minimum requirement is a three-year bachelor’s degree from a New Zealand university, or a qualification or combination of qualifications considered to be equivalent.

RESEARCH QUALIFICATIONS:

The minimum requirements to apply for doctoral study are that you should have completed, or be in the process of completing, a research-focused Honours degree or Master's degree. For PhD study you must achieve this degree at either the level of first-class or second-class division one (or equivalent).

UC has safe and affordable on campus and off-campus accommodation for a number and variety of students, These residential hubs are diverse, convenient, safe, and provide excellent value.

All of the residential accommodation provides:

Guaranteed places in halls of residence for international students

If you are a single international student who is over 18 and coming to study at UC (as a fully enrolled student) and apply by the 1st December you are guaranteed a place in a single fully-furnished room in one of the self-catered apartments at Ilam Apartments or Sonoda Christchurch Campus.

UC International College (UCIC) students can apply for an accommodation package at Ilam Apartments, Sonoda Christchurch Campus or Kirkwood Avenue Hall. Accommodation is for a minimum of two UCIC semesters.

Halls of residence

1.  Bishop Julius Hall  backs onto the historic Ilam Homestead and is a short walk through fields and gardens to the Ilam campus. It prides itself on being students’ ‘home away from home’.

2.  College House is bounded by two streams and borders Ilam Gardens. A large contemporary art collection of more than 100 artworks is displayed throughout the hall.

3.  Rochester and Rutherford Hall prides itself on its excellent food, high-quality facilities, vibrant community life, and providing a supportive environment for students’ academic    achievement.

4.  UC’s largest fully catered hall, University Hall offers a unique V1-First Year academic and social programme in a vibrant and diverse community.

5. Waitakiri Village is  fully catered hall of residence , perfect for a sporting enthusiast or student looking to make the most of Christchurch’s active lifestyle. The expansive lawn area provides ample space for recreational activities such as soccer, and other outdoor pursuits are only a short distance away.

6.  Kirkwood Avenue Hall is a self-catered hall of residence for first-year students

7.  Ilam Apartments are not only close to campus, they are walking distance to shopping malls and public transport. Ilam Apartments is a vibrant, fun and supportive accommodation option for students in their first year right through to postgraduate level.

8.  Sonoda Christchurch Campus  offers a smaller hall environment, allowing students a quieter but more connected lifestyle.

Home stay and private board

Home stay and private board are popular choices with international, study abroad and exchange students when they first arrive in Christchurch. In a welcoming family environment, you will have your own room, meals with the family and the opportunity to practice your English every day. It is available throughout Christchurch in a variety of homes, offering a wide range of living situations, from families with children to single people living on their own.

UC manages a number of rental houses that offer a community environment for: • postgraduate students • interns • research assistants. Room options range from properties rented by the room with shared kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities, to self-contained houses. Graduate House is the largest with 30 single and ensuite rooms.

Some units and self-contained houses are available and enable independent living close to campus.

Renting privately (flatting) is a great option for students, especially those in their second or third year of study. It allows you to live off campus and be more self-suficient.

Other accommodation options

If you are bringing your partner or family with you, or you are staying for less than a semester, then you may need to consider alternative options off campus, for example:

• Temporary accommodation

There are a number of scholarships available to international students.

UC offers International First Year Scholarships for up to 25 top-achieving international students who have gained University Entrance (or equivalent). These scholarships provide between $10,000 and $20,000 towards the fees for a full-fee paying international student’s first year of study at UC.

International students who are already studying at an overseas university can apply for a UC International Mobility Inbound Study Abroad Award* valued at up to $5,000 each. These awards provide support for any overseas university student who would like to enhance their education and international experience by studying at the University of Canterbury for one or two semesters on UC’s Study Abroad programme.

 UC also offers scholarships for master’s and doctoral study.
